Wildcats Return Home to battle Ranked Teams
Friday, October 17 vs. USC 7:00 p.m. PT
Sunday, October 19 vs. UCLA 1:00 p.m. PT
The Arizona soccer team (8-4) returns home to host a couple of teams ranked in the top-5. The Wildcats play defending national champion USC on Friday Oct. 17 and UCLA on Sunday Oct. 19. Both games will be played ay Murphey Field at Mulcahy Soccer Stadium.
Scouting the Opposition:
USC- The Women of Troy (11-1-1, 1-0-1) come to Tucson ranked sixth and on a 10-game unbeaten streak where they have outscored their opponents 37-9. USC has five players with five or more goals. Leading the way is senior forward Amy Rodriguez with seven goals. Associate Head Coach Harold Warren is a former assistant coach at Arizona. While at Arizona, Warren helped guide the Wildcats to the Sweet 16 in 2005.
UCLA- The Bruins (11-0-2, 2-0) come to Tucson tanked third. The Bruins have outscored their opponents 32-2 this season. They are the five-time defending Pac-10 Champions. The Bruins are at the top of three categories nationally including goals-against average (.147), shutout percentage (.846), save pct (.959), and goalkeeper Ashley Thompson is ranked first nationally in goals-against average (.162) and save pct (.956).
USC- The Women of Troy lead the all-time series 10-3-1. USC is on a three game unbeaten streak 2-0-1. The last time the Wildcats beat the Women of Troy 3-0 on Oct. 29, 2004. USC owns the longest winning streak at seven games from 1996-2002.
ULCA- The Bruins lead the all-time series 13-1. Currently the Bruins have a three-game winning streak. The last time the Bruins won in Tucson was in October 2006. The Wildcats lone win against the Bruins came at home in October 2004 1-0.
Last Week: Arizona @ Arizona State (ARIZ 2, ASU 1- 2OT)
For the first time in program history, the Wildcats defeated their in-state rivals with a 2-1 2OT victory. Sophomore KARINA CAMACHO scored her second game winning goal of the season in the second overtime for the Wildcats. Arizona tied the game at one in the 81st minute when senior LONDON KING received a cross from junior Jacqueline Broussard and put it in the back of the net. Goalkeeper Chelsea McIntyre recorded six saves.
100 victories and counting…
In addition to the program’s first win over Arizona State, it was also the program’s 100th victory.
Arizona also set the record for most overtime wins with three. Arizona has overtime victories over Michigan, Cal State Northridge and Arizona State. The Wildcats are one overtime game away from trying the school record for most overtime games in a season with six. The mark has been done three times (2000, 2005, 2006).
In the Net
Redshirt junior Chelsea McIntyre is one of the reasons the Wildcats have already surpassed last year’s win total. Through 12 games, McIntyre has 56 saves and five shutouts.
Last season the Wildcats had trouble putting the ball in the net. They averaged 1.07 goals/game. This year is a different story. With more playmakers in the lineup, Arizona has found the back of the net 19 times for 1.58 goals/game.
Freshman RENAE CUELLAR leads the Wildcats in goals and points through ten games. Cuellar has started 10 of the 11 games she has played in. For the season she has five goals and two assists. She also scored the game winning goal against Cal State Northridge in double overtime on Sept. 21.
Currently the Wildcats are ranked ninth in the West Region according to soccerbuzz.com. The Wildcats are ranked tied for 10th in the NSCAA/adidas West Regional Rankings.
Coaching, Two wins shy of 100
Dan Tobias, the winningest coach at Arizona, continues to add to his numbers. With eight victories this season Tobias now has 54 wins at Arizona and 98 for his career. His record at Arizona is 54-52-8 and his career record is 98-97-14.
