Women's Tennis Set for ITA Northwest Regional Championships

BERKELEY - The California women's tennis team heads to the Farm for the 2008 ITA Northwest Regional Championships on the courts of the Taube Family Tennis Stadium in Stanford, Calif. this Friday (Oct. 17) through Monday (Oct. 20). No. 7-ranked singles player sophomore Marina Cossou holds the second-seed in the field of 128 players and No. 22-ranked senior Claire Ilcinkas holds the sixth seed. Both players will receive first-round byes.
Golden Bear senior Bojana Bobusic is ranked No. 65 and holds the No. 11 seed while freshman Jana Juricova holds the No. 13 seed after claiming the St. Mary's Invitational singles crown last weekend. Cal also has two of the top eight seeds in the doubles field including the No. 24-ranked duo of Cossou and Ilcinkas (third seed) and eighth-seeded Juricova and senior Marion Ravelojaona. Both doubles pairs will receive first-round byes among the field of 64 teams.
In addition to Cal and host Stanford, the four-day event will showcase top players from the following Northwest region schools: Cal Poly, Fresno State, Gonzaga, Nevada, Oregon, Pacific, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's, San Francisco, San Jose State, Santa Clara, UC Davis, Washington and Washington State.
The singles finalists and doubles champion emerging at this regional will earn berths to the ITA National Indoor Championships, taking place Nov. 6-9 in Charlottesville, Va. Winners and finalists from the various ITA Regional Championships around the country, plus at-large selections, will make up the singles field of 32 and the 16-team doubles draw.
In addition to Cal's three ranked singles players, a host of top women's tennis players in the country will make the trip to Stanford including: No. 4 Hilary Barte (Stanford); No. 12 Melanie Florida (Fresno State); No. 13 Jessica Nguyen (Stanford); No. 16 Anastasia Petukhova (Fresno State); No. 21 Katsiaryna Zheltova (Sacramento State); No. 28 Venise Chan (Washington); No. 48 Lindsay Burdette (Stanford); No. 58 Maria Mizyuk (Nevada); No. 62 Jenni Heinser (San Francisco); No. 77 Carolyn McVeigh (Stanford); No. 86 Tinesta Rowe (Fresno State); No. 91 Caroline Bailly (Nevada); No. 112 Jessica Hoath (St. Mary's); No. 122 Jennifer Yen. Ranked doubles teams this weekend include No. 1 Melanie Gloria/Tinesta Rowe (Fresno State); No. 5 Hilary Barte/Lindsay Burdette (Stanford); No. 8 Renata Kucerova/Anastasia Petukhova (Fresno State); No. 26 Caroline Bailly/Maria Mizyuk (Nevada); No. 31 Steffi Wong/Brittany Blalock (Cal Poly); No. 42 Logan Hansen/Jessica Nguyen (Stanford).
Last year, Cristina Visico earned a spot at the Indoor Championships by advancing to the regional singles final where she fell to a No. 15-ranked Jessica Nguyen of Stanford. On the way to her finals appearance, Visico won five matches including straight-set wins against No. 49 Katsiaryna Zheltova of Sacramento State (ranked No. 21 this year) and No. 47 Anastasia Petukhova of Fresno State (ranked No. 16 this year).
