Walshe To Join Professional Ranks
Oct. 16, 2008
TUCSON, Ariz. - Former University of Arizona women’s golf standout Alison Walshe announced on Thursday her intentions to begin her professional playing career after signing a contract with Gaylord Sports Management.
Walshe, who will be represented by vice president of GSM subsidiary Gaylord Sports Group Eddie Smith, graduated from UA in May with a degree in interdisciplinary studies concentrated on marketing and sociology. Last month, she tied for 12th place at the California LPGA Sectional Qualifier and advanced to the finals in December. She also plans to enter the Futures Tour Qualifying Tournament in December, which will be played in Florida.
“Alison is the posterchild for the amateur player who has done things the right way and is ready to turn pro,” said Arizona head coach Shelly Haywood. “She has succeeded at every step of her playing career up to this point and is definitely ready to join the professional ranks.”
Walshe posted a 5-0 record this year in leading the United States to victory at the Curtis Cup and recently led her country to a third place finish at the World Amateur Team Championships. She competed in two LPGA major championships events during 2008, missing the cut by just two strokes at the Kraft Nabisco Championship as an amateur invitee before qualifying for the U.S. Women’s Open, where she placed 31st.
“I’ve had a great time competing as an amateur and collegiate player,” said Walshe, who captured six individual titles in two seasons with the Wildcats, “but I’m ready and eager to take the next step. Eddie and the team at Gaylord have been very helpful and supportive and I’m excited about what we’re planning to do together.'
GSM is a full-service professional management company that looks to enhance the careers of professional athletes and entertainment personalities in the world. Former UA athletes Jennie Finch and Taryne Mowatt are also included on the GSM roster.
