Arizona falls to No. 10 UCLA

The Arizona volleyball team (12-6, 2-4) played No. 10 UCLA tough for four sets, but fell to the visiting Bruins 3-1 Friday night in McKale.
“It’s frustrating because we know we’re capable,” said sophomore setter Paige Weber. “Stomaching a loss when you’ve given it your best is one thing, but stomaching one when you did everything you could is another story.”
The Wildcats struggled in the first set of the match, but played the Bruins tough in the match’s final three sets. However, Arizona had trouble finishing the Bruins and lost 25-15, 20-25, 25-21 and 25-22.
“I knew it was going to be a close match but it’s disappointing,” said head coach Dave Rubio. “This game is so momentum conscious, that if you’re not scoring for your self then you’re scoring for them.”
The Wildcats committed 23 attack errors and eight service errors to UCLA’s 19 and 12.
Arizona sported pink uniforms for the match as part of Arizona’s annual “Dig for the Cure” cause, which focuses on bring about awareness of Breast Cancer.
Sophomore Tiffany Owens played her best game of the season thus far for the Wildcats. The sophomore had a season-high 23 kills on her way to her sixth double-double of the year, adding 14 digs.
“Words can’t describe how we feel right now,” said Owens. “We really fought, but in our conference that just isn’t enough.”
The Wildcats started the match trailing 11-1 in the first set and struggled against the nationally ranked Bruins, but bounced right back and won their only set of the night in the second.
In the match’s final two sets, Arizona and UCLA went back-and-fourth, but the Bruins pulled through in the end. The final set highlighted the Bruins ability to close out sets when Arizona led 19-16, but could hold off the Bruins’ late set charge.
“We didn’t handle the jump toss by their setter (Nellie Spicer) real well,” said Rubio. “She was the difference in the match. Once we get it to 21-19, every mistake becomes crucial.”
