No. 11 USC Defeats Arizona State, 3-1

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Redshirt freshman middle blocker Lauren Williams (Houston, Texas/Stratford HS) had 13 kills and hit .435 (13-3-23) on the night while junior outside hitter Jessica Gysin (Los Gatos/St. Francis HS) had a team-high 14 kills Friday as the No. 11 USC Women of Troy defeated the Arizona State Sun Devils, 3-1 (25-13, 18-25, 25-23, 25-22).

Alex Jupiter added 13 kills for USC (10-5, 3-3) while Taylor Carico recorded 49 assists and nine digs. Junior libero Alli Hillgren had 25 digs for the Women of Troy.

Arizona State (10-9, 2-4) got double-doubles from Sarah Reaves and Margie Giordano Reaves had 16 kills and 16 digs while Giordano registered 16 kills with 15 digs. Marina Mercer had 45 assists and six digs for the Sun Devils.

USC hit over .300 in sets one and three, holding ASU to a .207 hitting clip for the match.

Gysin came out of the chute with two straight kills as USC would build a 5-2 lead in the first set. Reaves' kill kept the deficit at three for Arizona State at 9-6 before three hitting errors built the Women of Troy's lead to six at 14-8. USC scored four more points as part of a six-point streak and the 18-8 advantage. After kills from Sonja Markanovich and a solo block by Giordano, USC rattled off four more points as Zoe Garrett would later cap the set win with a cross-court shot from the right side.

In set two, the Women of Troy were their own worst enemy as six hitting errors helped the Sun Devils race out to the 11-5 lead. With a Garrett kill and Gysin solo block, both teams then went back and forth before two straight points kept the lead at six for ASU, 19-13. USC finished with 11 errors in the set as ASU closed out with a 5-2 run to even the match.

ASU held a 9-6 lead in set three, but Gysin figured in two points to tie it at 9-9. The Women of Troy took the lead at 13-12, thanks to an ASU error, and took advantage of another Sun Devil error later for the three point lead, 19-16. Arizona State evened it with three straight points and later took the lead, 22-21, on a service ace. Lauren Williams hit a pile driver to tie it and Reaves kept the Sun Devils ahead at 23-22. Two straight hitting errors by the host Sun Devils gave USC set point and Jupiter found the corner in the back to give USC the 2-1 lead in the match.

A six-pack aided USC's 9-4 lead at the start of set number four. Reaves capped a 4-1 run as the Sun Devils cut it to a two-point deficit at 10-8. Jupiter's kill sparked a 6-2 run as the Trojans pushed the lead back to six at 16-10. USC had to burn its first timeout after ASU scored three straight with the Trojans up, 19-15. The Sun Devils put the pressure on with three more points after the break, slicing the lead to one before Jupiter turned the momentum around with the kill. Roleder then aced her next serve and Williams and Carico teamed up on the block. Garrett hit another cross-court winner to give the match to the Trojans.

USC travels to Arizona for a 1 p.m. match on Sunday (Oct. 19).
