No. 6 USC Tops Arizona 2-0 On The Road

TUCSON, ARIZ - After playing the past six games on home turf, the No. 6 USC women's soccer team got the job done on the road, tacking up a 2-0 win over Arizona on Friday night in Tucson, Ariz. The Trojan defense pitched another Pac-10 shutout, while the offense got the game-winner from freshman Ashley Freyer and a second-half strike from senior Ashley Nick to improve to 12-1-1 overall and 2-0-1 in Pac-10 play. Arizona moves to 8-5, 1-1 with the loss.
The Women of Troy controlled the pace of the game, out-shooting the host Cougars 20-4 in the match. Several Trojans had their shot attempts saved by Arizona goalkeeper Chelsea McIntyre in the first 25 minutes of play. In the 38th minute of action, USC broke through, as freshman Ashley Freyer finished off a pass from senior Ashley Nick to get USC up 1-0 during the first half. Megan Ohai took a swing for USC before the close of the half, but McIntyre made the save to keep it a 1-0 USC lead entering halftime.
In the second half of play, USC got some shots off early against the Wildcats before USC goalkeeper Kristin Olsen was forced into her first and only save of the game in the 63rd minute of the match. Kelley Finch had belted a shot off the crossbar for the Trojans just before, and then USC broke through once again with a second goal in the 81st minute. After dishing up an assist in the first half, Nick drilled an unassisted goal from to take USC ahead 2-0 and on to the Pac-10 victory.
The Trojans continue Pac-10 competition with a visit to Arizona State on Sunday (Oct. 19) in a 1 p.m. match in Tempe.
