Cal Men Place Eighth at Pre-NCAA Meet

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The California men's cross country team took eighth with 315 points Saturday in the blue race at the Pre-NCAA meet held at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind. Senior Mark Matusak led the Golden Bears, finishing in 16th place. The Cal women finished 15th with 474 points in the white race.
Alabama won the men's 8K team crown with 89 points. Northern Arizona took second (113 points) and Michigan came in third with 146 points.
Matusak paced the Bears, taking 16th place with a time of 24:00. Junior Michael Coe came in second among Cal runners. He toured the course in 24:16 and placed 36th overall.
Alabama's Tyson David took top honors in the blue race, clocking a time of 23:30. Samuel Chelanga from Liberty won the white race with a time of 22:51, while Stanford won the white race with 77 points.
Florida State and Princeton tied for first place in the women's white race with 89 points, while Michigan was third with 168 points.
Florida State's Susan Kuijken claimed the individual blue race 6K title in a time of 19:48, with Nicole Edwards from Michigan following in second at 20:20. Brianna Felnagle of North Carolina took top honors in the blue race (20:02). Washington won the blue race with 36 points.
Cal has next week off as it prepares for the Pac-10 Championships on Oct. 31 in Springfield, Ore.
