Huskies Continue Impressive Regional Run
Oct. 18, 2008
BERKELEY, Calif. - The Washington men's tennis team continued to thrive at the ITA Regional Championships today, showing especially strong play in doubles, where the team combined to go 7-1 at Cal's Hellman Tennis Complex. In singles, Patrik Fischer, Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan, and David Chu all advanced to the Round of 16.
The Huskies matched tourney host California for the most singles players still alive in the third round with six. Three Huskies were ousted from singles today but the three aforementioned players all moved on in straight sets. Fischer, the No. 3 seed, defeated Greg Hirshman of Stanford, 6-4, 6-3, while sixth-seeded Nedunchezhiyan handled another Cardinal, Blake Muller, by a 6-2 7-6 (3) count. Chu pounded Pacific's Artem Gramma, 6-0, 6-1 to advance to the final sixteen.
In the next round, Fischer will face No. 9 seed Pedro Zerbini of Cal, who today defeated sophomore Martin Kildahl, 6-3, 6-2. Derek Drabble and Alex Rosinski also saw their singles runs end in straight sets.
Washington really shined in doubles play, with four teams advancing to the Round of 16. Fischer and Nedunchezhiyan are the tourney's top seed, and after a first round bye they topped a Pacific pair, 8-4. Drabble and Kildahl's opponents withdrew in the first round, but their second round match-up was two veteran Stanford foes in Richard Wire and Ted Kelly. The Huskies came out on top, 8-6.
Despite losing in singles, Rosinski continues to have a breakout tournament, as he and sophomore Brad Bator won twice to make the Round of 16. First they handled Nevada's Hallchurch and Lee, 8-2, then it was a Santa Clara pair that fell victim, 8-5. Finally, Chu and senior Ryo Sekiguchi also posted a pair of doubles wins, the latter coming over Stanford's Muller and Thacher, 9-8 (2). It was a satisfying upset as Muller is a former Pac-10 doubles champ and Sekiguchi has rarely played doubles through his career.
Sunday's action features the Rounds of 16 in both singles and doubles. Regionals continue through Tuesday, with the singles finalists and doubles champions earning automatic entry into the coveted ITA National Indoor Championships.
