Barte Upset In ITA Northwest Regional Semifinals
Oct. 19, 2008
STANFORD, Calif.- Sophomore Hilary Barte was upset by California's Bojana Bobusic in the semifinals of the ITA Northwest Regional Championships on Sunday afternoon, wrapping up an exhausting day that nearly ended early for the Cardinal All-American.
Bobusic posted a hard-fought 7-6 (6), 3-6, 7-5 victory over Barte, the tournament's No. 1 seed, to reach Monday's singles final. Bobusic will oppose Fresno State's Melanie Gloria, who defeated California's Marina Cossou 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 in the other semifinal.
The fact that Barte even reached the semifinal round was impressive enough. Earlier in the morning, she fought off match point against California's Claire Ilcinkas to rally for a 2-6, 7-6 (1), 6-0 victory. Bobusic led 5-4 in the second set and needed just one point to clinch the victory, only to have Barte fight back and win the tiebreaker before cruising to a 6-0 win in the third set.
On the doubles side, Fresno State placed two squads in the semifinals. Renata Kucerkova and Anastasia Petukhova defeated Barte and freshman Veronica Li 8-4 earlier in the day in a quarterfinal match. Kucerkova and Petukhova will face California's Ilcinkas and Cossou on Monday in one semifinal.
In the other semifinal, Fresno State's Tinesta Rowe and Melanie Gloria will battle California's Jana Juricova and Marion Ravelojaona.
The singles final will be played at 10 a.m., with the doubles matches to follow but not before 11:30 a.m.
