Bruin Defense Shines Again in 2-0 Win Over Arizona
Oct. 19, 2008
Tucson, Ariz. - Junior forward Lauren Cheney scored both Bruin goals Sunday, as the third-ranked UCLA women's soccer team posted its second shutout of the weekend with a 2-0 victory over Arizona at Murphy Field.
Cheney, the team's scoring leader with 13 points (9g, 5a), tallied her first strike of the match in just the fourth minute of play on a nifty spin move past an Arizona defender before scoring to the far post from 13 yards out. Christina DiMartino was credited with the assist on that goal.
Cheney would strike again at the 76:22 mark, scoring from just outside the Arizona box on a ball perfectly placed to the right corner, just past a diving Wildcat goalkeeper Chelsea McIntyre. Kara Lang fed Cheney on that goal.
UCLA's defense continues to shine this season, as the Bruin back line registered its 13th shutout in 15 matches. Bruin goalkeeper Ashley Thompson made one save on the day en route to her eighth shutout of the year. UCLA outshot Arizona 13-4 on the afternoon.
At 13-0-2 overall and 4-0 Pac-10, UCLA remains in excellent position to take home the school's sixth straight conference title. The Bruins have one of their toughest tests of the season next week, facing No. 7 USC on Friday at the LA Coliseum beginning at 7:00 p.m.
