Four Advance to Round of 16

TUCSON- The Arizona men's tennis team is feeling right at home at the ITA West Regional Tournament in Malibu, Calif. That's because four Wildcats have a chance to advance to the Quarterfinals today. Sophomores Jay Goldman and Andres Carrasco, along with juniors Pat Metham and Andres Arango all hope to win their morning matches and play later on this afternoon.
'Our guys have played some really solid tennis all weekend,' head coach Tad Berkowitz. 'Hopefully we can continue playing well and get all four of our guys in the Quarterfinals, and even further.'
In the Singles Main Draw, Goldman defeated Alex Konigsfeldt of UC Santa Barbara 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Goldman will face the tournaments overall No. 1 seed Bassam Beidas of Pepperdine today at 11:45 a.m. Tucson time. If Goldman advances, he would face either fellow teammate Metham of Moodi Kamal of Pepperdine at 3:00 p.m. Tucson time.
Metham defeated Charl Wolmarans of San Diego 6-4, 7-6. Metham will face Kamal of Pepperdine today at 11:45 a.m. Tucson time.
Carrasco defeated Steven Henderson of UC Irvine 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. He will face Matt Kecki of USC today at 10:00 a.m. Tucson time.
Arango defeated Ahmed Ismail of UCLA 6-0, 4-6, 6-3. He will face Dennis Lajola of Hawaii today at 11:45 a.m. Tucson time.
Francois VanderMerwe was defeated by Dean Jackson of San Diego 6-4, 6-0.
The Wildcats also had three players in the singles consolation bracket. Junior Ravid Hazi defeated John Parks of UC Riverside 7-5, 7-5. He then defeated Jordan Coleman of San Diego State 7-5, 6-1. Hazi will play Tyler Bowman of UC Irvine today at 9:30 a.m. Tucson time in the consolation Quarterfinals.
Freshman Jason Zafiros was defeated by Devin Nerenberg 6-2, 3-6, 11-9.
Sophomore David Humphreys lost to Robert Zacks of Cal Poly 6-7, 6-4, 10-3.
Arizona also had two separate teams in the doubles Main Draw. The duo of Arango/Carrasco was defeated by Amit Inbar/Holden Seguso of UCLA 9-7.
Metham/VanderMerwe lost to the duo of Dean Jackson/Charl Wolmarans of San Diego 8-6.
