USC Comes Up Short At ASU
Oct. 19, 2008
TEMPE, ARIZ. -- For the first time this season, the No. 6 USC women's soccer team was unable to stage a comeback from a first-half deficit. The Women of Troy had the advantage in all categories in their road match with Arizona State, but the Sun Devils came up on the winning end of the Pac-10 clash on Sunday afternoon in Tempe, Ariz. ASU's goal in the 17th minute of play stood up, and left USC with its first loss in 12 games after the 1-0 decision. The Trojans move to 12-2-1 overall and are 2-1-1 in Pac-10 play after this weekend's split in Arizona. Arizona State moves to 7-4-3, 1-2 with today's win.
USC had run its undefeated streak this season up to 11 straight games with a 2-0 win over Arizona on Friday, but Sunday's match at ASU interrupted that impressive run. The Sun Devils managed a dangerous attack during the 17th minute of play, as Karin Volpe got deep and was able to get past the USC defense and goalkeeper Kristin Olsen, taking a pass from Jill Shoquist and slipping in a score that took ASU ahead 1-0.
USC out-shot ASU 8-2 in the first half, and then turned the pressure up further in the second half with a 15-2 shooting advantage. While the USC defense held ASU to just four shots in the game, the Trojan offense forced six saves out of ASU goalkeeper Briana Silvestri during that second half but could not break through for an equalizer before the close of regulation, leaving the Trojans with just their second loss of the year.
USC gets back to Pac-10 action with a big matchup against UCLA on Friday (Oct. 24). The Trojans and the Bruins will clash at the Los Angeles Coliseum at 7 p.m., setting up a big conference showdown as well as a rematch of the 2007 NCAA Semifinal that USC won 2-1 before going on to win the Trojans' first-ever national championship. USC's two losses this season have both been 1-0 decisions on the road. The Trojans fell in overtime at Portland on Sept. 1.
