Washington Men's Crew Wins Head Of The Charles Regatta

BOSTON - Washington's men's crew emerged victorious from the waters of the Charles River, winning the Championship Eights title at the 44th Head of the Charles Regatta Sunday.
The Huskies defeated a field of 37 boats, including crews from all eight Ivy League schools, Wisconsin, Pac-10 rival Cal, and crews from France, the Netherlands, England, Spain and Turkey. Washington completed the cross-town course from Boston through Cambridge and into Allston in 14:28.087. At the first checkpoint, Washington was in second place to Pole France aviron Nancy, who clocked in seven-tenths of a second faster than the Huskies. By the second time-check at the Weld Boathouse, the crews were nearly lined up with one another, with the French holding a small, .093-second advantage. At the third marker in Cambridge, Washington had taken the lead, clocking in over a second faster than the French boat. Washington crossed the finish line over two seconds ahead of Pole France aviron Nancy, which recorded a time of 14:30.479. California came in third at 14:33.516 and Northeastern finished fourth in 14:42.169.
Washington's women's eight finished sixth in its Championship Eight, second among NCAA teams, pulling across the line in 16:39.641. The women faced a field of 38 teams, including the national teams of both the U.S. and Canada and seven Ivy League schools. The Huskies were in ninth place after the first checkpoint , but improved their position to eighth by the second. At the Cambridge checkpoint, the Huskies were in sixth place, behind only the Canadian national team, ASR Nereus of the Netherlands, Yale, the University of London/Tyrian Boat Club and the U.S. national team. Crossing into Allston, the Huskies maintained their position, with the Canadian team taking the top spot with a time of 16:02.507. ASR Nereus finished second in 16:14.964, followed by Yale and the University of London.
