WSU Men Tied for Fourth at Sycuan Invitational

Oct. 20, 2008

El Cajon, Calif.- Washington State University's men's golf team finished strong after playing two rounds today at the par-72, 6,687-yard Willow Glen golf course. The Cougars posted a team score of 563 (-13), placing them in a tie for fourth with Wichita State and ahead of host school San Diego State.

'We got off to a bit of a slow start, but really caught fire in the afternoon round and shot 273 (-15) at Sycuan!' said WSU Head Coach Walt Williams.

Leading the Cougar pack is sophomore Nick Ellis. Ellis enters the final round in a tie for fifth place with a two-round score of 138 (-6). Ellis, who finished in the top 25 at last year's Sycuan Invitational, fired an opening-round 70 (-2) and followed with a second-round 68 (-4).

Junior Austin Hurt enters the final round in the top 25, finishing day one in a tie for 16th after posting scores of 69 (-3) and 71 (-1).

Junior Kevin Tucker carded a first-round score 75 (+3) and 67 (-5) in the second round to finish in a tie for 28th. Junior Nick Grigsby and redshirt freshman Ryan Jones each shot 147 (+3). Sophomore Xavier Dailly posted a two-round score of 149 (+5) to wrap up the Cougar scorers.

The Cougar men shot a second-round 273 (-15), the lowest team score of the season and on the day.

'Having the low afternoon round in a strong field of 19 teams is very satisfying,' said Williams. 'We hope to go out tomorrow morning and play well again and see where that puts us at the conclusion of play!'

WSU will begin the final round tomorrow with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. Final round results will be posted at www.wsucougars.com.
