WSU Men's Golf Finishes Fifth at Sycuan Invitational

El Cajon, Calif.- Washington State University's men's golf team finish in fifth place after the final round today at the par-72, 6,687-yard Willow Glen Golf Course. The Cougars posted a team score of 848 (-16), finishing ahead of host school San Diego State by four strokes.

'The guys played very solid today with three under,' said Head Coach Walt Williams. 'We beat a strong SDSU and traditionally tough Wichita State for the first time in a few years!'

The leader for the Cougars was sophomore Nick Ellis. Ellis opened with a first-round score of 70 (-2), and shot 68 (-4) in the second round. The sophomore posted a final-round 71 (-1) to finish in a tie for eighth place, his first top ten finish for the fall season.

Juniors Kevin Tucker and Austin Hurt each finished in the top 25. Tucker shot a three-round total of 212 (-4), finishing in a tie for 19th. Hurt posted a final-round 73 (+1), finishing in a tie for 24th place. Tucker, with 11 top-25 career finishes; is in sole possession of tenth place on the WSU all-time top-25 career finishes.

'Ellis played great this week as well as Tucker and Hurt,' said Williams.Junior Nick Grigsby and Sophomore Xavier Dailly each finished the final day in 67th place. Grigsby shot a three-round total of 220 (+4). Dailly carded a 71 (-1) in the final round. Redshirt freshman Ryan Jones wrapped up the Cougar scorers with a 224 (+8).

Monday the Cougars shot a second-round 273 (-15), the second-lowest single-round score in school history.

Next up for the Cougars is the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate Oct. 27, in New Mexico.
