Softball Releases 2009 Schedule

SEATTLE - The University of Washington released its 2009 softball schedule today, which includes games against five of the eight teams which participated in the 2008 College World Series.
The Huskies will open up with three tournaments on the road in St George, Utah, San Diego, Calif., and Palm Springs, Calif., before they host the 2009 Husky Softball Classic. UW will then head to tournaments in Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Fullerton, Calif., before a home weekend series against New Mexico.
UW will then embark on an always-difficult Pac-10 schedule. Three of the eight Pac-10 schools which have softball teams advanced to the College World Series last season, including Arizona State which captured its first national championship.
UW opens the season at the Red Desert Classic in St. George, Utah, Feb. 6-8, where they will take on 2006 national runner-up Tennessee, BYU, Southern Utah, Loyola Marymount and Utah. The next weekend, UW will travel south to the Campbell Cartier Classic in San Diego where they will face UC Santa Barbara, Utah State, San Diego State and Long Beach State.
The following weekend, UW heads back down to Southern California for the Palm Springs Classic, Feb. 20-22. The Huskies will take on Long Island, 2008 NCAA semifinalist Florida, Mississippi, Nebraska and Ohio State.
The Huskies finally play in front of the home crowd Feb. 27-March 1 when they host the Husky Softball Classic. Opponents and game times have yet to be determined.
UW will then head east to play in the Easton SEC/Pac-10/Big 12 Challenge hosted by the University of Alabama. UW will play Baylor in addition to playing Georgia and 2008 College World Series participant Alabama twice each. The Huskies wrap up their tournament schedule when they make their annual trip to the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, Calif., a tournament that features some of the best competition in the country. UW is scheduled to play Florida State, Penn State, 2005 national champion Michigan, Fresno State and Cal State Fullerton.
Pac-10 play begins March 27 on the road with games at Cal and Stanford followed by the first home weekend on Pac-10 play, April 3-5 when the Huskies host 2008 College World Series participant Arizona and defending national champion Arizona State.
UW will be on the road for nearly an entire month before finishing the regular season with three consecutive home weekends. The Huskies will be looking to make their 16th consecutive appearance in postseason play.
