Oct. 23, 2008
The USC women's swim team, featuring 2008 Olympic gold medalist Rebecca Soni as well as other Olympians and Olympic Trial participants, kicks off the 2008-2009 season at the SMU Invitational in Dallas on Friday and Saturday (Oct. 24-25). Action begins at 7:30 p.m. (CST) each day.
The Women of Troy, under third-year head coach Dave Salo, were 5-5 overall last season, 2-5 in the Pac-10. They were fifth at the 2008 Pac-10 Championships, 16th at the NCAA Championships.
Soni will be competing for USC for the first time since winning a gold medal in the 200-meter breaststroke at the 2008 Olympics. Soni also won silver medals in the 100-meter breaststroke and the 400-meter medley relay, entrenching herself as one of the world's top swimmers.
Another 2008 Olympian is making her debut for the Women of Troy. Freshman Katinka Hosszu swam for Hungary, posting a pair of top 20 finishes in the 200-meter and 400-meter IM.
Among the current Trojans who competed at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials are Waller, Houston and Lahey as well as freshman Courtney Kalisz and Tanya Krisman. Krisman was a 200-meter fly finalist while Kalisz was a semifinalist in the same event.
Following the SMU Invite, USC begins the dual meet season with home meets against Arizona on Nov. 14 and vs. Arizona State on Nov. 15.
