USC Travels To Fullerton For Final Regular Season Cross Country Meet
Oct. 23, 2008
The USC women's cross country team will compete at the Titan Invitational hosted by CS Fullerton in Fullerton, Calif. on Friday (Oct. 24) at 5 p.m. It is the last regular season meet for USC which is holding out its top eight runners in preparation for next week's Pac-10 Championships.
USC is coming off back-to-back wins at the Pepperdine Invitational and the Roadrunner Invitational, a feat not accomplished by the Trojans since the 1997 season. Last week in Bakersfield, Zsofia Erdelyi led the way by winning the meet with a school 5K record of 16:51.90. Not far behind her were Bridget Helgerson who finished third with a time of 17:25.30 and Sarah Cocco who took fourth place with a time of 17:33.60. Nine of USC's 10 runners set new PRs on the fast 5K course.
This week USC is sending six girls officially to run at Fullerton, in addition to freshman Anniya Louis and Frida Flodstrom who are redshirting in 2008 and will be running unattached. USC's runners for the meet will be senior Liz Gill, junior Jasmine Leija, sophomores Brianna Bentley, Kristin Byrne and Allison Rojewski and freshman Jessica Lundin.
'This is the last race of the year and a low-pressure situtation for these girls and I hope they can end the season on a good note and have a performance they can build upon for next season,' said USC cross country coach Tom Walsh. 'This is Anniya and Frida's first test of the year. They have been training in the Fall and this is a chance for me to evaluate where they currently stand. Both are redshirting this season but will be on next season's squad.'
The Trojans' competition at the meet will be teams from CS Bakersfield, Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine, UC Irvine, UC Riverside and host CS Fullerton.
This is USC's last race before the Pac-10 Championships to be held on Oct. 31 in Eugene, Ore. USC will be sending seven official runners and one alternate to the Pac-10s: Juniors Katherine Ellis, Chanel Fischetti, Christine Greer and Helgerson, sophomores Cocco, Erdelyi and Zara Lukens. Freshman Leah Gaeta will make the trip as USC's alternate.
