No. 5 Stanford Defeats No. 14 USC In Four

LOS ANGELES -- Foluke Akinradewo led with 19 kills, six blocks (including three solo), eight digs and a .571 night (19-3-28) as the No. 5 Stanford Cardinal beat the No. 14 USC Women of Troy, 3-1 (25-14, 22-25, 25-23, 25-21), at the Galen Center.
Janet Okogbaa had 12 kills for Stanford (16-3, 7-1) with four blocks. Cynthia Barboza recorded 11 kills and 17 digs while Alix Klineman also had a double-double with 10 kills and 10 assists. Cassidy Lichtman had five kills, 31 assists, 15 digs and three block assists for the Cardinal.
Barboza figured in three kills at the start as Stanford built a 9-4 lead in the first set. The Cardinal took advantage of several Trojan errors to keep its advantage at eight points, 14-6. Two straight blocks helped USC get to within five, but Akinradewo put Stanford in cruise control, closing out the set with an 8-2 run to take a 1-0 match lead.
Stanford carried its momentum into the second set with a 7-2 run at the beginning. Roleder gave the Trojans their first sign of life in the match with a kill and service aces for four straight points and a one-point deficit. USC would later tie it at 10-10, but a 6-3 run put Stanford back on top at 16-13. On the strength of two straight kills by Jupiter, USC retook the lead on the 5-1 run at 18-17. Okogbaa's kill started three straight as Stanford retook the lead on Klineman's ace at 20-18. After USC's timeout, Zoe Garrett changed the complexion of the set as her kill and a later block with Gysin capped five straight points. Gysin would tie the match with the set clincher for the Women of Troy.
USC scored four straight to take a 4-1 lead in the third set before Stanford with four of its own and the 5-4 score. At 9-9, USC used a 6-3 lead to the media timeout. Akinradewo sparked a 5-1 run for the Cardinal out of the break to take the 17-16 lead. Both teams traded points before Stanford built its lead to two at 21-19, thanks to kills from Klineman and Akinradewo. Williams and Roleder teamed up for a block and a Cardinal attack error gave USC the lead at 23-22. Klineman steadied the Cardinal with a kill and Barboza went back-to-back as Stanford pulled out the set to take the lead in the match.
In the fourth set, Roleder won the joust to open things as USC raced to the 5-0 lead. Two kills from Klineman helped the Cardinal get back in the set, trailing by one at 7-6. The Women of Troy would push their lead back to five at 13-8, taking advantage of two straight Cardinal errors. Garrett bounced a dome shot off a Cardinal attacker for the 16-10 lead, but Stanford rallied with four straight as Klineman and Akinradewo did the job with kills. Roleder added two kills as USC still led by three at 18-15, but Stanford turned to its blocking game as two stuffs helped to tie it at 18-18. After Akinradewo made it 19-19 on the overpass kill, the Cardinal reeled off four more points to take command at 23-19 and the eventual match victory.
