SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The 2008 Wilson/ITA West Regionals rolled on Friday in San Diego which saw the Sun Devils falter in singles action but come through strong in doubles with two teams advancing to the round of 16 and looking to advance again tomorrow.
Doubles started off the day, which proved to be a strong start as the one and two-seed ASU doubles teams of Nadia and Laila Abdala and Kelcy McKenna and Micaela Hein all came off with wins. First up, the one seed, Nadia and Laila Abdala came out to take on Long Beach State's Lisa Sutton and Deborah Armstrong who gave the Sun Devils a run for their money but in the end the maroon and gold emerged victorious 8-6. They'll hit the courts tomorrow to face Hawaii's Alyssa Nafarrete and Natasha Zorec at 8:30 a.m.
In similar fashion, two-seed duo of Kelcy McKenna and Micaela Hein also combined for a win in the round of 32 where they faced Loyola Marymount's Bliss Nixon and Jane Pringle, the resutls was a quicker more definitive win for the Sun Devils this time as they took it 8-3. They face San Diego State's Roxanne and Sierra Ellison tomorrow at 8:30 a.m.
Singles didn't fare as well for the Sun Devils as each remaining Devil was knocked out of contention in the round of 32 Friday afternoon. Top-seeded Kelcy McKenna couldn't escape the round of 16 as 15th-seeded Sarah Fansler of USC was able to top her in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5. Nadia Abdala couldn't fend off tenth-seeded Hannah Grady either as she fell in straight sets 6-4, 6-0.
Sianna Simmons also fell to the same fate to Hannah Grady as Grady dispatched the Sun Devil in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.
Play continues tomorrow with the Sun Devils battling for a doubles crown starting at 8:30 a.m. in San Diego at San Diego State University.
