CORVALLIS, Ore. – Sarah Reaves lit up the boards with 13 kills while the Sun Devil defense slammed 14.5 blocks to the floor Saturday night in Corvallis as the Sun Devil Volleyball team stepped up to sweep away the 24th-ranked Oregon State Beavers on their home court of Gill Coliseum with a 25-22, 25-20 and 25-23 win. The win puts ASU at 11-11 overall on the season and 2-7 in Pac-10 play as OSU falls to 14-8 overall and 3-6 in the Pac-10.
The Sun Devils came out in set one to flip the script on the Beavers as they stormed out to a .382 attack percentage with 4.5 blocks to wrangle the first set from OSU 25-22. Kristin Trayser, Sarah Reaves and Margie Giordano all had three kills in the set with only one attack error to ASU’s name while forcing nine Beaver errors to make the difference.
Set two ASU came out strong again with four straight points to open the match and force OSU to an early timeout, but it made no difference as ASU blasted .226 in the set with a 71% sideout percentage telling the tale as Sarah Reaves collected five kills to lead the maroon and gold with Sara Todorovich right on her heels with four kills and three block assists as ASU took a 25-20 win and a 2-0 lead into the break.
Set three didn’t slow the Sun Devils rally as they battled with against a renewed vigor of O State offense who came out to collect 14 kills, but their seven errors dug their grave along with A State’s 5.5 blocks as well as Sarah Reaves exploding for five kills in the match to collect her 19th career double-double and 11th on the season.
The win snaps a six-match losing streak and also makes ASU 9-2 when winning the first set.
“I’m happy for our athletes, they’ve committed themselves to changing the focus and process and it’s wonderful for them to get a return on the investment they’ve put in to this program.” summarized Head Coach Jason Watson after the win.
The Sun Devils will return home for next weekend where they’ll set to host Part Two of the annual ‘Duel In the Desert’, taking on in-state rival Arizona next Sunday, November 2 in Tempe at Wells Fargo Arena. Match start time is at 1:30 p.m. MT and will be aired on Fox Sports Net.
