Huskies Battle San Diego State To 2-2 Double OT Draw
Oct. 26, 2008
SEATTLE - Freshman forward Brent Richards scored a pair of goals to lead Washington which battled to a 2-2 double overtime draw with San Diego State in Pac-10 men's soccer action at Husky Soccer Field, Sunday afternoon.
Richards scored in just the third minute of the match and after the Aztecs came back to score two straight to take a 2-1 lead, added his second goal in the 55th minute to put the Huskies (8-5-2, 3-2-2 Pac-10) back on even footing with San Diego State (3-8-3, 1-3-3 Pac-10). Neither team was able to find the back of the net through the extra minutes, as UW and SDSU played their sixth overtime game in the last eight meetings.
The Huskies, who remained in second place in the Pac-10 standings, ended up the weekend with a loss and a draw after falling to UCLA, 2-0, on Friday night despite outplaying the Bruins. After a bye next week, UW has three more regular season matches.
'All things considered I was pleased with the effort today,' UW head coach Dean Wurzberger said. 'Friday night took a lot out of us, you saw the way we tried to win that game and get back in it. That was very evident early but there is a point where you don't have any more gas left in the tank and we hit that point. We showed a lot of character to come back because that blocked shot that gave them a goal, 90 percent of the teams lose (after that). But we fought back and got the equalizer and tried to win the game at the very end. I cannot fault them, just like Friday night. If we keep producing efforts like that we will keep our hopes for postseason alive.'
After struggling to score against UCLA on Friday, Richards helped the Huskies get back on the board with his seventh goal of the year just two minutes and 32 seconds into the contest. Fellow freshman forward Dylan Tucker-Gangnes fed the ball to Richards from the top of the box and Richards slotted a 10-yard shot through the legs of SDSU goalkeeper Jorge Rosales.
The Aztecs came back to equalize at 28:10 when a long throw from Matt McManus into the box found Nick Cardenas who dished to Jamel Wallace. Wallace headed in the ball to equalize, 1-1.
San Diego State pushed ahead with an unassisted score from Raymundo Reza at 53:06, only to have the Huskies answer just over a minute later. Richards scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season after receiving a long cross from redshirt-freshman Jamie Finch from the left corner of the field.
Richards had a good chance to score the go-ahead goal on a header that sailed just over the crossbar in the 64th minute. He attempted another header that went just wide in the 89th minute and tallied one of the two UW shots in the second overtime period.
Richards finished with a team-high five shots and tallied his second multiple-goal effort of the year. Tucker-Gangnes also tallied three shots, while junior midfielder Taylor Cochran added two.
Both sides kept their opposing goalkeepers busy, as Rosales grabbed seven saves on 15 Husky shots and UW sophomore goalkeeper Stephen Fung grabbed five saves on 12 Aztec shots.
The Huskies will have next week off before taking their final regular season road trip to the Bay Area. UW will face Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif., on Friday, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m., and California in Berkeley, on Sunday, Nov. 9, at 2 p.m. UW will host Oregon State in its regular season finale, Friday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m.
'Now we have a chance to rest up physically and mentally with a bye week,' Wurzberger said. 'We intend on using it for rest but also for keeping them sharp. We know we have to win all three of our final games. Our season is still in our control.'
