Oct. 28, 2008
Las Cruces, N.M. - The Washington State men's golf team finished in a three-way tie for sixth place after the final round of play at the par-71, 7,078-yard New Mexico State University Golf Course.
Junior Austin Hurt led the Cougar pack, posting a first-round score of 73 (+2) and a 69 (-2) in the second round. He fired a third-round score of 70 (-1) to move up two places and finish in a tie for seventh place. Hurt grabbed his first top 10 finish of the season and his 11th career top 25 finish.
Junior Kevin Tucker and sophomore Nick Ellis each finished in the top 25. Tucker shot a 70 (-1) in the final round to move up nine spots and finish in a tie for 17th place. This was Tucker's 14th top 25 career finish, placing him in sole possession of ninth place on the WSU all-time career top 25 finishes.
Ellis carded a three-round score of 217 (+4) to finish in a tie for 23rd place, his 11th career top-25 finish.
Hurt and Ellis are each only one top 25 finish away from cracking the all-time top 10 list.
'Austin and Kevin played great, Ellis also had a good tournament...but we weren't able to come up with a fourth score,' said WSU Head Coach Walt Williams.
The Cougar men posted a three-round score of 874 (+22), to finish in a tie with Miami (Ohio) and Nevada. The Cougars finished the fall season with four top five finishes in six tournaments.
'We did beat a couple teams ranked ahead of us but it's very disappointing to fall back,' said Williams.
The spring season will begin in Pensacola, Fla., at the Argonaut Invitational, March 2.
