ASU Women's Soccer Hosts Oregon and Oregon State in Final Regular Season Home Games
Oct. 31, 2008
The Arizona State women's soccer team closes out the home portion of its 2008 schedule this weekend when it hosts the Oregon Ducks (Friday, 7 p.m.) and the Oregon State Beavers (Sunday, 1 p.m.). In addition to it being the final home games of the season for ASU, this weekend's contests will also be the final home games for Sun Devil seniors Carla Scanniello and Kylla Sjoman.
Currently 7-5-4 (1-3-1 Pac-10) the Sun Devils still find themselves very much in the hunt for a berth in the NCAA Tournament with four games remaining in the regular season. After this weekend's contests, the Sun Devils will close out the regular season next weekend in Washington where they will face Washington and Washington State, two teams who have recently spent time among the nation's top 25.
The Sun Devils are inviting all their fans to come out and spend Halloween with them when they take on Oregon Friday night. As a part of Friday's `Kick-or-Treat' promotion, all fans who wear their Halloween costume to the game will be admitted for only $3.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR
The Ducks come into this weekend's contest with a record of 7-7-2 (0-4-1 Pac-10). Although they have yet to earn a Pac-10 win, the Ducks have been extremely competitive. Last week they were defeated 2-1 by each of the Washington schools after being tied 1-1 in the second half of both contests (would eventually lose to Washington State in double OT). Prior to that the Ducks tied the Beavers 0-0.
Oregon State (6-7-2) is currently tied with ASU for seventh place in the Pac-10 with a 1-3-1 mark in conference place. Last week the Beavers upset No. 22 Washington State 3-2.
Last season the Sun Devils split their two contests against the Oregon schools, falling 1-0 in Oregon before coming back to defeat Oregon State 2-1 in double overtime. After falling behind 1-0 early against the Beavers, Alexandra Elston would lead the Sun Devils back, scoring the equalizer in the game's 65th minute and the game winner 3:24 into the second overtime.
With last week's goal at Cal, sophomore Karin Volpe moved into sole possession of ninth place on ASU's all-time list for most career goals. Volpe now has 13 goals in her career. She needs to more goals to tie recent Sun Devil graduate Courtney Crane for eighth place.
With four games remaining in the regular season, junior goal keeper Briana Silvestri is currently on pace to break her own single-season record for GAA. Last season Silvestri set the school mark with a final GAA of 0.85. In the 12 games she has played thus far in 2008, Silvestri currently has a GAA of 0.78.
