No. 9 Huskies Set For CordeValle Collegiate

Oct. 31, 2008

SEATTLE, Wash. -- The University of Washington men's golf team will face the schools that finished in the top three of last year's NCAA Championship as part of the CordeValle Collegiate, which begins Monday.

The field, which includes the ninth-ranked Huskies, will also feature Arizona, Arkansas, Augusta State, Charlotte, Coastal Carolina, Lamar, Northwestern, Santa Clara, No. 6 Stanford, UCLA and No. 3 USC.

Huskies coach Matt Thurmond said that he was excited for the tournament, played at CordeValle Country Club in San Martin, Calif., because of the tough competition it offered, citing that UCLA, Stanford and USC finished 1-3 in the country last season.

Facing a strong lineup of golfers, the Huskies announced their starting lineup for Monday's tournament, which is Richard Lee, Tze Huang Choo, Nick Taylor, Kevin Spooner, Chris Killmer and Darren Wallace. John Wise will also make the trip, playing as an individual on the par 72, 7,169-yard course.

The Huskies have garnered national attention so far from their finish last season (No. 7 at the NCAA's) and their strong play during the fall, where the UW has finished in the top five of all three tournaments it has played. That attention has resulted in a No. 9 ranking by Golfweek. Also, Killmer (20) and Lee (23) are ranked among the nation's best ball strikers. Taylor is ranked No. 18 in the World Amateur Rankings by Golfweek.
