Maxwell Griffin Named UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week
Nov. 3, 2008
Senior forward Maxwell Griffin (Palmdale, CA/Littlerock HS) of the UCLA men's soccer team was selected as the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for Oct. 27-Nov. 2.
Griffin led UCLA to a 2-0 win over Stanford on Sunday that clinched the Pac-10 title for the Bruins with two weeks remaining in the season. Griffin, who was also named to Top Drawer Soccer's Team of the Week, scored both goals in the contest, striking in the 52nd and 72nd minutes to record his Pac-10 leading eighth and ninth goals of the year. Griffin leads the conference in scoring with a career-best 20 points and is also tops in goals scored (nine) and game-winning goals (three). Thanks in part to Griffin's play, UCLA has gone unbeaten in 12 of its last 13 games, with six consecutive shutouts. The Bruins' Pac-10 championship is their sixth in the nine years of Pac-10 men's soccer.
This is Griffin's first UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and the third of his career.
Also nominated: Shelby Buckley, W. Cross Country; Doreena Campbell, W. Basketball; Christina DiMartino, W. Soccer; Amanda Gil, W. Volleyball; Krsto Sbutega, M. Water Polo; Drew Shackleton, M. Cross Country.
