The No. 2 USC men's golf team, competing in its final event of the 2008 fall schedule, established a 10-stroke lead after the first round of the UCLA-hosted 2008 CordeValle Collegiate at the CordeValle C.C. in San Martina, Calif., on Monday (Nov. 3).
In a tournament in which six players play and five are counted, the Trojans finished the first round at a combined 3-under 356, 10 swings ahead of second-place Charlotte (367). Stanford and Arkansas are tied for third (370).
Matthew Giles, coming off a fourth-place finish in his previous event, led USC with a 3-under 69, good for a share of the first-round lead. The Australian sophomore had an enviable round. Starting on the 10th tee with the rest of his team, Giles put together a par front 9 before using birdies on 6, 7 and 8 to finish at 3-under for the day. He shares the lead with Stanford's Sihwan Kim.
Lovemark was 3-under going out, and, after a birdie on the 4th hole, was at 5-under after 13 holes. A couple of hiccups on the final few holes kept him from turning in a sub-70 round. Sluiter was 2-under going out three birdies and a bogey and had one of each coming in.
Playing individually, redshirt fresman Bo DeHuff is tied for 37th at 4-over 76.
Play continues Tuesday and Wednesday (Nov. 4-5).
