Nov. 3, 2008
The Arizona women's basketball team plays its final exhibition game on Tuesday evening against Oklahoma Panhandle State in McKale Center with tip-off scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The game will provide the final chance for the Wildcats to play 40 minutes prior to the 2008-09 season opener on Friday, November 14 against Toledo at 3:00 p.m. (HST)
STICK IT FOR A TICKET:
In recognition of the importance of voting on this Election Day, the Wildcats will offer a special $1 ticket to all fans who show up wearing their 'I Voted' sticker. Make sure to get out and vote in the morning and keep that sticker on all day before coming to watch the Wildcats take on the Lady Aggies after the polls close.
The Wildcats played the annual Red/Blue Game last Wednesday evening in their first chance to play against opposition other than teammates on the McKale Center floor. Though the blue team came out on top of a 66-57 scoreline, head coach Niya Butts was able to witness some positive signs heading into the season. Freshman Reiko Thomas came off the bench to hit 5-of-7 shots in the first half and tally 14 points that sparked the Red team to a 32-31 halftime advantage. Tasha Dickey led the way for the Wildcats with 16 points, hitting 8-of-8 free throws, while Amina Njonkou added 8 points and 8 rebounds.
NEW KID IN TOWN:
Head coach Niya Butts inches one game closer to her first regular season game as the new Arizona head coach after taking over the program on April 3, 2008. Butts, a 2000 graduate of the University of Tennessee, played four seasons for the legendary Pat Summitt and was a part of two NCAA championship teams. Butts was also chosen the 1997 SEC Defensive Player of the Year and helped the Lady Vols to three SEC titles.
Butts spent the last five seasons in the SEC, acting most recently as the associate head coach at the University of Kentucky. During her five seasons in Lexington, Butts helped guide the Wildcats to a 88-72 record and four postseason appearances. She also has made coaching stops at Michigan State and Tennessee Tech.
ABOUT THE AGGIES:
Oklahoma Panhandle State is a NCAA Division II member of the Heartland Conference and is located in Goodwell, Okla. The Lady Aggies were 15-13 last season, but enter the 2008-09 season with almost an entirely new roster. Head coach Brad Vanden Boogaard returns just redshirt freshman Halee Edwards, who saw time in just one game last season.
