Golden Bears Head to the Desert for ASU Thunderbird Invitational

Nov. 4, 2008

BERKELEY - The California women's tennis team completes fall individual tournament play this weekend (Nov. 7-9) at the 2008 ASU Thunderbird Invitational on the courts of the Whiteman Tennis Center in Tempe, Ariz. Senior Marion Ravelojaona headlines a group of four Golden Bears as she returns to the site where she claimed the singles draw crown with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, victory over Arizona State's Sabrina Capannolo in 2006. Ravelojaona returned to action this season after redshirting her junior year with a leg injury and looks to repeat the success she experienced two years ago.

Ravelojaona is 6-1 in her comeback senior season after claiming the Blue Flight singles title at the Cal Nike Invitational earlier in the fall. Joining the senior on the desert trip is sophomore Rachael Dillon, and freshmen Stephany Chang and Jana Juricova. Dillon holds an 8-3 record in singles play this season and advanced to the Nike Invitational final where she fell to her senior teammate.

Chang is 7-3 in singles play and advanced to the round of 32 at the Wilson/ITA Northwest Regional Championships where she fell to a No. 12-ranked Melanie Gloria of Fresno State. Attempting to bounce back from a loss that snapped her 11-match winning streak, Juricova also fell to Gloria at the regional championships but in the quarterfinal round. Prior to the loss, Juricova had won 10 of her 11 consecutive matches in just two sets including five wins at the St. Mary's Invitational where she claimed the singles title with a 6-2, 6-3, victory over No. 62-ranked Jenni Heinser of San Francisco.

The Bears will also join together as doubles teams at the Thunderbird Invitational. Together, Dillon and Juricova got three wins at the St. Mary's Invite to claim the doubles crown. Juricova later teamed up with Ravelojaona to advance to the semifinal at the regional championships.
