ASU Women's Basketball Defeats Houston Jaguars in Exhibition
Nov. 5, 2008
The Arizona State women's basketball team defeated the Houston Jaguars 83-61 in an exhibition contest Wednesday at Wells Fargo Arena.
'We got our first one under our belt,' senior guard Briann January said. 'We got a win. You've got to be happy with that.'
Senior center Sybil Dosty led the Sun Devils with 17 points in just 15 minutes of action, and she went 9-13 at the free throw line and added nine rebounds on the night.
'Sybil looked good,' head coach Charli Turner Thorne said. 'I give her a ton of credit, because they were swarming her. She had two or three people on her, she went up strong, she drew fouls and she made her free throws tonight. I'm very proud of her.'
January added 13 points for ASU, while forward Lauren Lacey had a double-double with 10 points and a team-high 11 rebounds.
ASU got out to a quick start, as January scored 11 straight points early, including three 3-pointers, to give the Devils a 14-3 lead. They never looked back from there, taking a 49-31 advantage into halftime and then stretching their lead as high as 29 points in the second half before wrapping up a 22-point victory.
Overall, the Sun Devils shot 48.4 percent on the night and held the Jaguars to 35.8 percent shooting.
The Sun Devils begin regular season action Nov. 14, when they face Cleveland State in the first round of the Preseason WNIT at 6 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena.
