Nick Taylor Wins The CordeValle Collegiate
Nov. 5, 2008
SAN MARTIN, Calif. -- UW junior Nick Taylor (71-71-70-212) birdied three out of his final four holes on Wednesday at the CordeValle Collegiate on the way to his second career collegiate tournament victory.
'I'm really excited for Nick,' said UW head coach Matt Thurmond. 'We've been giving him a hard time lately because he does so well in these big tournaments and he just got back from the World Amateur and we were saying, 'Why don't you do that in a season college tournament.''
Taylor, who was the runner-up at the 2008 NCAA Championship, finished second at the World Amateur Team Championship in Adelaide, Australia in October. On Wednesday, Taylor led the No. 10 Huskies (1110) to a fourth-place finish, behind USC (1080), Stanford (1106) and UCLA (1107). Taylor shared medalist honors with USC's Tim Sluiter.
'He once again came out and showed that he is as good or better than any amateur out there,' said Thurmond about Taylor, who was also the only player to card every round under par this week.
'I'm proud of Richard,' Thurmond said. 'His solid play put him in the top 10 again, and Chris played like a champion on Wednesday, picking up a couple of birdies at the end.'
Lee (+2, 72-74-72) finished 10th at the CordeValle, making this week his fourth top 10 finish in four career Division I tournaments. Killmer (+7, 75-75-73) birdied two of his last four holes to move into 21st place. The Huskies finished their fall season on Wednesday. They will return to collegiate competition Feb. 4-6 for the Waikoloa Intercollegiate in Hawai'i.
