WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Three Pacific-10 Conference women's basketball teams were ranked in the top 25 in preseason polls released by the Associated Press and USA Today/ESPN Coaches rankings. The 2008 National Championship runner-up, Stanford was the highest-rated among the Conference teams, coming in at No. 2 in both polls. California was ranked No. 9, while Arizona State was tabbed No. 17 by the writers and No. 18 by the coaches.

The Cardinal, who were picked to win the 2008-09 Pac-10 title by the Conference coaches, were 35-4 last season and were the first league team to advance to the NCAA Final Four since 1997. Stanford grabbed its eighth-consecutive Pac-10 Championship crown last year and returns 11 letterwinners from that squad, including Wade Trophy national player of the year candidates Jayne Appel and Kayla Pedersen, also the 2008 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year.

Winning a school-record 27 games, the Bears earned their first NCAA Tournament victory in 2008, advancing to the second round. Cal was picked to finish second in the league in the Pac-10 Women's Basketball Coaches Poll after finishing second last year and returning all five starters in 2008-09. Among the players returning are Wade Trophy candidates Devanei Hampton and Ashley Walker, as well as, All-Pac-10 selection last year Alexis Gray-Lawson.

The Sun Devils return Briann January, the reigning Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year, from last year's 22-11 team that advanced to the second round of the 2008 NCAA Tournament. ASU also returns a veteran squad, which includes 11 letterwinners and three starters.
