CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - No. 22-ranked California women's tennis senior Claire Ilcinkas and No. 7-ranked sophomore Marina Cossou each won their first matches today at the 2008 ITA National Indoor Championships to move on to the round of 16. No. 65-ranked senior Bojana Bobusic fell in her match and will play in the back-draw round of 16. The four-day tournament is hosted by the University of Virginia and the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va.
As the fifth-seeded women's singles player in the tournament, Cossou took out Brown's Bianca Aboubakare in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. She will face Fresno State's No. 16-ranked Anastasia Petukhova in the round of 16. Ilcinkas had an uphill climb in the first round, taking on the seventh-seeded No. 11 Georgia Rose of Northwestern. Rose failed to uphold her seeding however, falling to Ilcinkas in two sets, 6-3, 6-4. Ilcinkas draws No. 87-ranked Ragini Acharya of William & Mary in the round of 16.
Bobusic suffered a 6-4, 6-1, defeat at the hands of No. 67-ranked Marrit Boonstra of Florida in the round of 32 and will face Wiveca Swarting of Nebraska in the singles consolation round of 16 tomorrow (Nov. 7).
