Rodriguez Gets Game-Winner For No. 9 USC
Nov. 7, 2008
EUGENE, ORE. - The No. 9 USC women's soccer team grabbed an important 1-0 road win over Oregon on Friday night on a first-half game-winning goal from senior Amy Rodriguez. The Pac-10 victory bumps the Trojans' overall record to 14-4-1 and improves their conference standing to 4-3-1 with just one game remaining in Pac-10 play. Oregon moves to 9-8-2, 2-5-1 with the loss.
USC was able to create several scoring opportunities before Rodriguez broke through in the 43rd minute. USC forced a pair of saves out of Oregon goalkeeper Cody Miles during the first half. As halftime drew closer, however, USC pushed forward once again. Kelley Finch knocked a through ball past the Duck defense, finding Rodriguez for a shot to the far post that lifted the Trojans ahead 1-0.
In the second half, Oregon worked to get some chances of its own, only to see the USC defense and goalkeeper Kristin Olsen turn the Ducks away. Olsen hauled in four of her final five saves during the second half to preserve the shutout win for the Trojans. The shutout marks Olsen's 18 career solo shutout and is the ninth shutout by the Trojans this year. For Rodriguez, her game-winning strike gives the senior 12 career game-winners to rank her No. 2 all-time at USC - the same slot that Olsen holds on the career shutout list.
Now with 47 goals scored on the year, the Women of Troy have equaled their scoring total from last year's NCAA championship season. The Trojans now turn to close out Pac-10 play with another road game, taking on Oregon State in an 11 a.m. match on Sunday (Nov. 9) in Corvallis, Ore.
