Three Golden Bears Advance to Quarterfinals at Thunderbird Invitational

Nov. 7, 2008

TEMPE, Ariz. - Three players from the California women's tennis team advanced to the quarterfinal at the Arizona State Thunderbird Invitational today, each getting two wins at the Whiteman Tennis Complex in Tempe, Ariz. Third-seeded freshman Jana Juricova, sophomore Rachael Dillon and senior Marion Ravelojaona each got straight-set victories in their two matches to push through to the round of eight. Freshman Stephany Chang had trouble getting by her first-round match but notched a win in the round of 16 in the singles consolation bracket.

Juricova opened up with Fresno State's Danon Beatty in the round of 32 and squeaked by with a 6-4 first set win before shutting Beatty out, 6-0, in the second set. In the round of 16, Juricova wasted little time disposing of Michigan's Denise Muresan, 6-1, 6-2, to earn her berth in the quarterfinal round. Facing Samantha Mouly of San Diego, Dillon fought out a tough second set to claim the 6-2, 7-5, victory before needing two more 7-5 sets to take out No. 90-ranked Tania Mahtani of Michigan. Dillon and Juricova will each face players from UCLA in the quarterfinal round; Juricova draws Ali Walters and Dillon gets Nina Pantic.

Winner of the 2006 Thunderbird Invitational, Ravelojaona returned to the desert tourney and got a 6-2, 6-2, win against Michelle Sulahain of Michigan before claiming a 6-4, 7-5, win against Fresno State's Bruna Paes to advance. She will face the third seed in the tournament, No. 39-ranked Chisako Sugiyama of Michigan in tomorrow's quarterfinal.

Chang fell in a 6-2, 6-1, decision at the hands of Sona Novakova of Armstrong Atlantic in the first round but bounced back to get a three-set win in the consolation bracket, taking out Carling Seguso of UCLA, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4. Chang will draw Michigan's Lindsey Howard in the back-draw quarterfinal. Cal's doubles teams fell in two matches, Juricova and Ravelojaona, 8-4 to Mahtani and Sugiyama of Michigan; Chang and Dillon, 9-8 to Olivier and Paes of Fresno State.
