Women's Tennis Puts On A Strong Showing At Day One of Thunderbird Invitational
Nov. 7, 2008
TEMPE, Ariz. – The Arizona State Women’s Tennis Team kicked-off the 14th annual Thunderbird Invitational Friday afternoon in Tempe at the Whiteman Tennis Center which saw Micaela Hein and Ashlee Brown advance to the round of 16 in the Main Draw Bracket.
The day opened up with doubles which ASU entered only one team into as Ashlee Brown and Sianna Simmons stepped up to represent the Maroon and Gold as they faced off against Michigan’s Michelle Sulahian and Kari Wig. The Wolverines proved to be a solid competitor holding the Sun Devils in a close match which ultimately ASU pulled ahead in as Brown and Simmons took the 8-5 win.
Right after the let-out of doubles, the teams rolled straight into singles play where Micaela Hein came out firing as she took a decisive 6-0, 6-3 straight sets win over her first opponent, Erin Monson of Utah to advance to the round of 16. Joining her there with a straight sets win as well was Ashlee Brown who took a 6-3, 6-2 win from Lindsey Howard of Michigan.
Freshman Sianna Simmons came out strong in the round of 32 taking a 6-3 win from Fresno State’s Bruna Paes before the Bulldog rallied back to take the second set 6-4. The third proved to be a gritfest as the Sun Devil and Bulldog battled it out, taking it into a tiebreak where Paes just barely edged Simmons 7-6(5). Simmons came back strong in her next match against Michelle Sulahian of Michigan, taking the first set 6-3 before the Wolverine stormed back and took the second 1-6. Simmons rallied in the third to come back with a 6-4 win to seal it.
The round of 16 proved to be a tough one for Micaela Hein and Ashlee Brown as both Sun Devils stepped in to face seeded opponents with Hein taking on the one-seed, Chisako Sugiyama of Michigan and Brown taking on the four-seed Juliette Coupez of San Diego. Hein gave Sugiyama a run for her money though as in the first set alone she pushed the Wolverine to a tiebreak before falling 7-6(2). Hein came right back with another tight 7-5 win to knot it at one before falling 6-4 in the third.
Ashlee Brown battled to a third set as well against the fourth-seeded Torero as she came out to take the first set 6-3, but couldn’t keep up as Coupez fired back with back-to-back 6-1 wins in the second and third.
The 14th annual Thunderbird Invitational continues tomorrow in Tempe at the Whiteman Tennis Center with doubles starting off the day at 8:30 a.m. with singles bracket play continuing immediately after.
