Day Two Results From The 14th Annual Thunderbird Invitational

TEMPE, Ariz. – Day Two of the 14th Annual Thunderbird Invitational rolled on Saturday in Tempe at the Whiteman Tennis Center which saw Sona Novakova of the Armstrong Atlantic Pirates surge to the forefront to upset the top-seeded Chisako Sugiyama of Michigan in the semifinals where she’ll face the three-seed Jana Juricova of Cal tomorrow in the finals.


Doubles started out the day which saw the sole Sun Devil duo of Ashlee Brown and Sianna Simmons face-off against a powerful Michigan Wolverine team of Chisako Sugiyama and Tania Mahtani where it saw the young Devil duo give the Wolverines a run for their money, but ultimately falling in an 8-6 loss. Another highlight of the day was the Armstrong Atlantic duo of Sona Novakova and Alida Mueller-Wehlau upset a tough Cal Golden Bears team of Jana Juricova and Marion Ravelojaona 9-7.


In singles the Sun Devils had a tough outing as they played tough, but were unable to come away with a win on the day. Sianna Simmons matched-up against Erin Monson of Utah, where she fell in a 6-2, 6-2 loss while teammate Ali Van Horne faced Rika Tatsuno of Michigan and also fell in straight sets 6-4, 6-2. Last up on the day for the Sun Devils was Micaela Hein to stepped in to face a tough opponent in Michigan’s Whitney Taney who she took the first set from 6-3 and looked to have her on the ropes in the second 3-1 before a sprained ankle sidelined Taney and the match.


The 14th Annual ASU Thunderbird Invitational continues on tomorrow in its final day at the Whiteman Tennis Center in Tempe. The day will start at 8:30 a.m. with doubles with the finals of the singles brackets following.
