Bloggin' with Baughman - First Installment
Nov. 10, 2008
Taylor Baughman, a freestyle All-American and Journalism major, will be blogging throughout the week on her and her teammate’s experience while being honored at the White House in recognition for capturing both men’s and women’s 2008 NCAA swimming and diving titles.
There is a lot of premeditating that comes with the training it takes to win a national title. Minute details-starts, turns, and hundreds of seconds-combine with the larger particulars-time standards, relay orders and personal expectations. Last season, it seemed that everything came together exactly how we had planned. I will never forget the euphoria surrounding the night that we captured our first national title in March.
Months later, I am still amazed by the accomplishments of my teammates, and as a culmination of the entire experience, both the men’s and women's teams will fly to Washington D.C. tomorrow to meet President George W. Bush and the Arizona Congressional Delegation.
The team is very excited to get out to D.C. For many West Coasters, this will be their first trip. Our itinerary takes us on tours of the Washington and Mall Monuments, the U.S. Capitol building, the Cannon House Office Building, and the White House, where we will meet with the president. I am truly honored to have been invited for such an experience.
The team is definitely packing differently for this trip than they do for most--we are expected to be in professional attire for the majority of the time we spend there. My suitcase must feel odd-instead of holding its usual entourage of swimsuits and towels, high heels and dress slacks have taken their place. We can't wait to get out to D.C. and not only represent Arizona Athletics, but the University of Arizona and the city of Tucson, too. More tomorrow from our nation's capitol!
