Meet The Cardinal: Alex Fisher

Nov. 12, 2008

Alex Fisher is a senior outside hitter from Menlo Park, Calif. who has seen key court time for the Cardinal recently. A graduate of local Menlo School, Alex has made six starts this season, appeared in 10 of the team's 13 Pac-10 matches and contributed at least one kill in all but two of those. She looks to graduate this spring with a major in human biology and a minor in American Studies.

Being from the Bay Area, were you a Stanford fan growing up?

Growing up in Menlo Park, I was a total Stanford groupie. I'm pretty sure all of the pictures I have of me growing up include some kind of Stanford memorabilia -- be it a sweatshirt, hat, shirt, bball shorts, whatever. It's embarrassing. I came to a lot of Stanford volleyball matches, but I was primarily a basketball player back then so my idols were people like Kate Starbird. Once I started playing volleyball, the cross-over phenom Kristin Folkl was a clear choice for a hero, and I still consider her one of the greatest athletes to watch of all time. The best story of my growing up as a Stanford groupie experience is one my teammates have heard every home match for the past 4 years. When I was in 4th grade, the dollies were out of town with the football team so, for some reason, four of my friends and I were recruited to do the dance between the second and third games -- you know, the can-can gun-drawing one. I have about ten pictures from the experience, and there's not a single one in which I'm doing the same dance move as the rest of the group. I'm pretty sure that's when and where my dancing career ended.

What's the most interesting thing you've done at Stanford?

Adventures with Mark Sherwood. The kid knows the campus better than anybody ever should. Cost me 7 stitches once, but it was worth it. I'll leave it at that.

What are you NOT good at?

Dancing. See answer to question 1 for more details. Or ask my teammates, or anybody who knows me for that matter.

What's been your best memory so far with Stanford volleyball?

There are too many memories to pick one, and I am so grateful for that. These girls are my best friends and every single day, no matter how ordinary, is a memorable one when I'm with them.

What is the best advice you've ever received?

Fight on. Courtesy of the USC Trojans, thanks for the lesson guys. But seriously, any time my body is hurting me or my life is falling apart, you'll find 'fight on' written on my left wrist. It summarizes the hundreds of inspirational speeches I've received over the past twenty-one years, as well as pretty much everything I have scrawled in my hundred-something-page quote book. It keeps me going.

What's the best vacation you've ever taken or favorite vacation spot?

Stanford Sierra Camp, it's my favorite place on earth.

Anything you're 'addicted to'?

I'm addicted to a lot of things -- but they come in waves. I go through serious sushi phases, burrito phases and frozen yogurt phases. The one constant in my life is smoothies. I go every day. The other day, the lady at the counter asked me if I wanted 'the usual.' Now that's embarrassing anywhere, but it's especially embarrassing at a place where the workers change shift every two hours.
