No. 10 Cal Faces Stanford in Regular-Season Finale
Nov. 12, 2008
After earning two much needed wins last weekend, No. 10 California plays host to Stanford this week in the final game of the regular season. The Golden Bears (9-3-5, 4-2-3 Pac-10) would record their eighth consecutive 10-win season with a victory. Stanford will be looking for revenge after Cal topped the Cardinal, 1-0, in overtime when they met at Stanford earlier this season. The Bears take the field on Saturday, Nov. 15, at 2 p.m. at Edwards Stadium.
Saturday's game will also be Senior Day for Cal's five seniors - Tyler Barry, Chris Deal, Ian Ebert, Pat Marion and Michael Nieraeth.
Bears Beat Beavers and Huskies Last Week
Last weekend featured a pair of wins that Cal needed to win in order to remain in the hunt for an at-large bid to the NCAA College Cup. Behind the efforts of the team's leading scorer, sophomore Andrew Wiedeman, the Bears defeated Oregon State, 1-0, and Washington, 2-1, last weekend in Berkeley.
Wiedeman was instrumental in both of Cal's victories, tallying two goals, one of which was the gamewinner. Against the Beavers, Wiedeman scored the game's only goal in the 72nd minute. It was Wiedeman's third game-winning goal of 2008. Junior goalkeeper Stefan Frei also recorded his seventh shutout of the season.
Against the Huskies, with Cal trailing 1-0, Wiedeman took a pass from sophomore Demitrius Omphroy and went down field and scored to tie the game at one. It was the eighth goal and the 20th point of the season for Wiedeman. The Bears would go on to win the game when senior Pat Marion found the back of the net in the 88th minute.
In the Rankings
The Bears are currently ranked No. 10 in the Soccer Times and No. 11 in the College Soccer News polls, No. 12 in the NSCAA and No. 17 in the Soccer America rankings.
Among conference leaders, Stefan Frei leads the Pac-10 in goals-against average (0.72), and is tied for first in shutouts with seven.
Cal, as a team, leads the conference in goals-against average (0.72), goals allowed (13), and is tied for first in shutouts with eight.
Last Time vs. Stanford
Cal and Stanford met for the first time this season on Oct. 18 at Stanford. The Bears were able to escape with a victory after sophomore Servando Carrasco tapped in the game-winning goal in overtime, as Cal won, 1-0. It was the 100th career victory for Kevin Grimes at Cal. Stefan Frei also earned his fifth clean sheet of the campaign on that night. He currently has seven.
Scouting the Opposition
Stanford (4-10-3, 2-5-2 Pac-10) picked up a big conference win over Washington last Friday as it knocked off the Huskies, 4-2, on The Farm. On Sunday, the Stanford-Oregon State contest ended in a scoreless draw, but the Cardinal outshot the Beavers, 21-12.
Bobby Warshaw, last season's Pac-10 Freshman of the Year, is Stanford's leading scorer this year with eight points.
With the regular season coming to an end after Saturday's game, Cal will await to see if it earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament on Monday, Nov. 17. It would be the Bears' eighth consecutive trip to the College Cup.
