No. 3 Stanford Impresses In Triple-Distance Meet Versus No. 11 Cal

Stanford, Calif. - The No. 3 Stanford men's swim team put on an impressive performance at the Avery Aquatic on Wednesday afternoon in a triple-distance meet against California. Although the meet was not scored, the Cardinal had the swimmer with the best combined times in each of the six disciplines contested.
The Cardinal were led by Eugene Godsoe who was the only swimmer to sweep all three distances (50, 100, 200) in one event. Godsoe won the 50 back with a time of 22.66 seconds, the 100 back with a time of 49.01 seconds and the 200 back with a time of 1:48.91.
Also winning their event overall with wins at two of three distances for Stanford were Nate Cass (IM) and Austin Staab (sprint free). Cass took the top spot in the 200 IM (1:49.74) and the 400 IM (3:57.28), while finishing second in the 100 IM (51.12). Staab took the top spot in the 50 free (20.66) and the sprinters 200 free (1:39.02), while placing second in the 100 free (45.19).
In the butterfly, freshman Bobby Bollier had the top combined time, despite winning only the 200. Jason Dunford won the 50 (21.78) and the 100 (48.57), but Bollier dominated the field in the 200 (1:48.82) to claim the top overall time.
In the breaststroke, Paul Kornfeld had the top overall time after winning the 200 (2:01.29) and placing second in both the 50 (25.79) and the 100 (55.48).
The distance freestyle events went to Chad La Tourette who had the top overall time by way of the 1,000, where his time of 9:19.85 was over five seconds better than the competition. La Tourette also finished second in the 500 (4:35.55) and sixth in the distance 200 (1:44.91).
In diving, Dwight Dumais won the one-meter competition with a score of 329.47 points. Tom Henninger of Cal won the three-meter with a score of 314.85 to best Brent Eichenseer of Stanford (314.62) by the slimmest of margins.
The Cardinal will not compete again until 2009 when they host Pacific on January 10, in dual meet action.
