Nov. 13, 2008

TEMPE, Ariz. - Three Arizona State women's soccer players - Liz Harkin, Karin Volpe and Katie Shepard - were honored by the Pac-10 Conference, which announced its annual awards on Thursday.

Harkin, a junior defender, earned first-team All-Pac-10 honors following a season in which she started 19 games in helping the ASU defense accumulate seven shutouts throughout the season. Harkin is currently in Chile with the U.S. U20 National Team which is competing in the U20 World Cup.

Volpe, a sophomore forward, earned All-Pac-10 Honorable Mention recognition after leading the Sun Devils in goals (9) and points (20) for the second consecutive season. Volpe also led the team in shots (45) and game winning goals (3). Three of Volpe's goals came in Pac-10 play, including the game winning goal in ASU's 1-0 upset of then-seventh-ranked USC on October 19.

Shepard, a freshman defender, was another valuable component in the Sun Devils' defensive effort in 2008 and was recognized for her contributions in being named to the Pac-10's All-Freshman Team. Shepard, who started all 20 games for the Sun Devils, became the second ASU player in as many seasons to earn All-Freshman honors. Last season Alexandra Elston was also named to the Pac-10's All-Freshman Team.
