WESTWOOD, Calif. – An 11 kill effort from Sarah Reaves wasn’t enough to keep the Sun Devils afloat Friday night in Westwood as they fell 25-20, 25-12 and 25-11 to the ninth-ranked UCLA Bruins in Pauley Pavilion. The Sun Devils are now 12-14 overall and 3-10 in the Pac-10 as UCLA advances to 17-8 overall and an even 7-7 in conference.

Set one saw the Sun Devils come out strong, hitting .268 with 13 kills in the set. Leading the way was Sarah Reaves with five kills for a .308 attack percentage. Margie Giordano matched her .308 attack percentage and collected four kills while the Devil D held their own with four blocks. In the end though, UCLA just barely edged ASU with a .311 average led by Amanda Gil’s six kills to take a 25-20 win.

UCLA came out storming in the second set as they hit .289 with an amazing eight blocks as they held down the net and flew past ASU who couldn’t get their offense to click into place. Three Bruins collected three kills to lead the pack while Sara Todorovich and Sarah Reaves added three to their tally as well. The effort wasn’t enough though as UCLA cruised off with a 25-12 win to take two going into the break.

The Bruins ran away with it in the third set though hitting .400 through most of the set to rally up 10 kills and take advantage of costly ASU errors as the Sun Devils had ten attack errors to cement their fate as UCLA ran off with a 25-11 win and the sweep.

“It’s disappointing, I’m disappointed at the way we prepared and the way we came out and competed. As a staff we have to take ownership for that. We have to take this opportunity to realize that we need to prepare better to perform better.” recapped Head Coach Jason Watson postmatch.

The Sun Devils will hit the hardwood again tomorrow as they travel cross-town to play against the tenth-ranked USC Women of Troy. Match time is 7 p.m. in Los Angeles at the Galen Center.
