Olsen Saves The Day In USC NCAA Win Over BYU
Nov. 15, 2008
PROVO, UTAH - USC goalkeeper Kristin Olsen made two clutch saves during the deciding penalty-kick shootout to help secure an NCAA Second Round win for the USC women's soccer team. Putting away the winning shot was Megan Ohai, who followed scores from Janessa Currier, Stacey Strong and Karter Haug during the shootout to register a 2-1 win over host BYU on Saturday afternoon. The tense victory pushes the defending national champions on to the NCAA Third Round, where USC awaits their opponent - either UCLA or San Diego. The Women of Troy improve to 17-4-1 with the win, while BYU finishes the year at 18-6-0.
After a 1-1 lockup held through two overtimes, the teams lined up for a penalty kick shootout to decide who would advance to next week's NCAA Third Round. BYU took the first shot against Olsen and put it away. Janessa Currier lined up next and drilled hers to keep it even. Up against Alyssa Vander Veur, Olsen dove for the ball and gathered it in to silence the crowd. Stacey Strong set up USC for the go-ahead strike and nailed it for a 2-1 advantage in the shootout. Facing her third Cougar shooter, Olsen put a stop to that attempt as well. Karter Haug knocked in her opportunity to make it a 3-1 lead, and although BYU made good on their next PK, Megan Ohai's blast to the top right corner won the game for the Trojans.
The Women of Troy had taken the first lead of the game with a score during the first half of regulation. The ball was sent in on a throw-in, where Brittany Kerridge hit a pass to Amy Rodriguez. Rodriguez pushed the ball back out wide for Kerridge, who knocked the ball back into the box. Ashley Nick went for a diving header on the shot, drilling the ball in for a 1-0 lead for the Trojans. USC would get a few more looks during the half, but did not add to its lead before the half. BYU mounted a late strike, getting a shot off with 25 second left that Olsen gathered in.
BYU picked up the pace in the second half with the crowd behind it. In the 62nd minute, after already earning looks through a corner kick and a deep free kick, the Cougars earned another corner from the right side. The ball found its way into the box, where Andrea Willis got a body on it and put it through to lock up the game 1-1 at 61:16.
The tension mounted throughout, as the Cougars managed six shots in the second half to four by the Trojans. Once overtime came up, BYU got the first look but put it wide. Rodriguez drove a shot from the right that was saved wide, and the ensuing corner kick was eventually cleared away. In the second overtime period, BYU came frighteningly close to ending the game when a long shot try got through Olsen's hands and went off the post, falling near the goalline where Janessa Currier came up big with a game-saving clear off the line. Ashli Sandoval got a good head on a late centering pass from Megan Ohai in the final minute, but the ball went wide to bring up the shootout.
