USC Goes Down to the Wire With Charlotte

RALEIGH, N.C.-The Women of Troy dropped a close one in their season opener at the Wolfpack Classic in Reynolds Coliseum, 60-62 to Charlotte.
USC started out slow, with the Women of Troy getting into a 0-7 slump to start the game. USC made their way back out of the hole with two free-throw shots and a fifteen foot jump shot by senior guard Camille LeNoir. A 3-pointer from junior forward Aarika Hughes at the 16:24 mark and freshman guard Ashley Corral's first collegiate points, a 3-pointer at 15:25, brought USC within 1, 10-11. Freshman forward Michelle Jenkins followed shortly with her first points as a Trojan, a layup at 14:32 to tie the game at 12-12. The Women of Troy and the 49ers traded baskets for the next 6 minutes, until senior guard Brynn Cameron began an 8-point USC run with a basket at 7:57. At the 6 minute mark, capped by a jump shot by junior guard Heather Oliver, the Women of Troy held the biggest lead of the game, by either team at 10 points. The 49ers cut into the lead with baskets from senior guard Traci Ray and Aysha Jones and the Women of Troy went into halftime with a 32-28 lead.
The Women of Troy were led in the first half by Corral with 8 points and LeNoir with 7. USC started the second half off quickly with a 3-pointer from freshman forward Briana Gilbreath, to put the Women of Troy up 36-28. With two back-to-back layup baskets by Charlotte's Ashley Spriggs, the USC lead was cut to 4 at 18:08. A layup by LeNoir and two free throws by Hughes brought the lead back up to 8 at the 16:50 mark. The 49ers cut the lead to 2 at 15:02, but the Women of Troy answered with a run that ballooned the lead back to 10, 50-40 at 11:46. During that 4 minute stretch, USC was led by Corral who put up 5 points and Jenkins, who added 2. However, Charlotte went on a run 8-0 run to make it a 2 point game, 50-48 at 8:15. That run gave the 49ers momentum, and along with a 3 and a half minute drought for the Women of Troy, Charlotte took a 5 point lead with 2:30 left in the game. The Women of Troy would come back, and at the 1:37 mark Gilbreath made a shot and Kari LaPlante followed with a layup with 43 seconds left to make it a 1 point game, 60-61. With 17 seconds left, Charlotte's Mccallum missed a 3-pointer. The Women of Troy drove up the court and LeNoir was fouled by Mccallum with 8 seconds left, putting her on the line for a one-and-one free-throw situation. LeNoir missed the first free throw and the Women of Troy put Charlotte's Ray on the foul line with 4 seconds left. Ray made the first and missed the second, giving USC 4 seconds to try for an an equalizer. LeNoir drove up the court and threw up a 3-pointer just inside the half-court line which was off to the left, leaving the final score at 60-62, giving Charlotte the victory.
The Women of Troy were led by Corral who had 15 points and 4 steals. LeNoir followed with 13. Hughes led USC in rebounding with 11. Charlotte's leading scorer was Mccallum with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
USC will face Milwaukee in the Wolfpack Invitational consolation game on Sunday (Nov. 16) at 12 pm et. at Reynolds Coliseum.
