Cynthia Barboza Nabs Second Pac-10 Player of the Week Honor
Nov. 17, 2008
Stanford, Calif. - Stanford's Cynthia Barboza has been named the Pacific-10 Player of the Week, as announced by conference commissioner Tom Hansen earlier today. The senior outside hitter brought Stanford one step closer to the Pac-10 title on Friday, helping the squad sweep No. 7 California in Berkeley.
Barboza picked up 13 kills (4.33 kps) and 18 digs (6.00 dps) in the three-set victory over the No. 7 Golden Bears. Helping her team avenge its only 2008 conference loss, Barboza was on fire from the beginning, and gave Stanford early momentum with seven kills in the opening set. She finished with her 11th double-double of the year, and led all players in both kills and digs. She hit .419 in the match (sixth time this year over .400) and tallied a season-high four blocks, including three solo blocks.
The award is the fourth career honor for Barboza, and her second this season. The Cardinal senior also won the award on Oct. 27 for her efforts against USC and UCLA in Los Angeles.
Stanford (22-3, 13-1 Pac-10) looks clinch at least a share of its third consecutive conference title with two wins at home this weekend. The squad will take on No. 10 USC and No. 9 UCLA in its final regular-season home matches on Friday and Saturday, with Saturday's match marking Senior Night for Barboza and fellow seniors Foluke Akinradewo, Jessica Fishburn and Erin Waller.
