Stanford Signs Two Gymnasts
Nov. 19, 2008
STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford women's gymnastics coach Kristen Smyth has announced the signings of Ashley Morgan and Nicole Dayton to letters of intent for the 2010 season.
Morgan, the daughter of baseball Hall of Famer Joe Morgan, is a senior at Carondelet High in Concord, Calif.
Dayton attends East Grand Rapids High in Grand Rapids, Mich.
'We are really excited to welcome Ashley and Nicole to the Stanford women's gymnastics family,' Smyth said. 'They are exciting athletes, tough competitors and leaders on their teams and in the community.
'Ashley is strong on all four events, but I am most excited about the aggressive way she works beam. Nicole is also a solid all-around performer, but is fantastic on vault and floor. She jumps well, commands an audience and is fun to watch.'
Morgan is a three-time Junior Olympics national qualifier, who won state and regional all-around titles while representing Bay Aerials Gymnastics in Fremont, under coaches Lisa Aguirre, Neal Gallant and Rod Radunzel. Morgan went undefeated on beam this season and won a national title on floor in 2007.
Dayton is a powerful and dynamic gymnast, who is especially strong on floor and vault. She is a four-time Junior Olympic national qualifier and a three-time national vault champion. Dayton won Region 5 all-around titles three times and was the Michigan state all-around champion from 2004-2008 while representing Twistars of Lansing, Mich., where she was coached by John and Kathryn Geddart.
Stanford is the defending Pac-10 champion and finished third in the nation last season.
