Three 2009 Bears Named Under Armour High School All-Americans
Nov. 20, 2008
LEXINGTON, Ky. -
Three members of Cal volleyball's 2009 recruiting class were named to the 2008-09 Under Armour High School All-American team as announced by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). Setter Elly Barrett and middle blocker Correy Johnson were each served first-team notice while middle blocker Tia Gaffen received second-team honors. Last week, Barrett, Johnson and Gaffen each signed national letters of intent to play volleyball for the Golden Bears in 2009.
As members of the first team, Barrett and Johnson will receive invitations to play in the inaugural Under Armour All-America High School Volleyball Match and Skills Competition taking place at the Qwest Center Omaha, December 21, in Omaha, Neb. in conjunction with the 2008 AVCA Annual Convention and following the conclusion of the NCAA volleyball championships.
For the first time in the three-year history of the award, both a first and second team were selected, with 24 players on each. The 48 players represent 23 states and 44 high schools. For complete rosters and more information on the Under Armour High School All-America teams, please visit www.avca.org.
The most highly-regarded senior setter in the nation and one of 2009's most sought-after recruits, Elly Barrett (Westlake HS/Austin, Texas) is as accomplished as prep volleyball players come. She led her team to the Texas state finals in 2005 and 2007 and was named a 2007 PrepVolleyball.com High School All-American and this year was a Senior Ace (No. 12). Among her many all-tournament and MVP accolades, Barrett holds the distinction of having led her Junior Olympics team to the 2008 title, garnering MVP honors on the way.
Correy Johnson (Lake Howell HS, Winter Park, Fla.) is a middle blocker from the Sunshine State. She received Florida All-Star Volleyball notice in 2008 and was named Best Blocker at the National Jr. Classic. She too is a PrepVolleyball.com Top 50 Senior Ace (No. 14). As a junior in 2007, she was named to the all-state second team and was the Seminole County Volleyball Player of the year. She holds Lake Howell single game and single season records for both blocks in volleyball and blocked shots in basketball and was a Lake Howell Heisman Trophy Winner.
A middle blocker from the Gopher State, Tia Gaffen (Wayzata HS, Plymouth, Minn.) recently took her team to a fifth place finish as she received Minnesota All-State First Team honors. She became the first player in Wayzata history to record 1,000 career kills and this fall, logged the highest hitting percentage and most kills in a single season. Gaffen parlayed a top-50 junior recruit listing into a PrepVolleyball.com Top 50 Senior Ace (No. 47) listing and received 2007 all-tournament honors at the junior Olympics.
The Bears (20-5, 10-4 Pac-10) are currently ranked No. 7 in the Bison/AVCA top 25 poll and prepare to face No. 9 UCLA (18-8, 8-7 Pac-10) tomorrow (Nov. 21) at 5 p.m. and No. 10 USC (16-8, 9-6 Pac-10) on Saturday (Nov. 22) at 5 p.m. The match against the Trojans is Senior Night and will be broadcast live by Fox Sports Net.
