Tucson- The Arizona women’s volleyball team (15-12, 5-10) overcame a loss in the first set and rallied in the next three to upset No. 8 Oregon (21-7, 9-6) 3-1 Friday night at the McKale Center.
The Wildcats dropped the first set 18-25, but regrouped to win the next three 25-20, 25-22, 25-12.
“It was a culmination of a lot of great practices,” said head coach Dave Rubio. “It’s been a slow evolution for us.”
After being out hit .455 to .188 in the first set, Arizona surged back and dominated the visiting Ducks, hitting .405, .350 and .391 in the match’s final sets.
“I didn’t tell them anything new,” Rubio said. “We need to work better on serving and passing, there’s no magic to it. It was their ability to go out and play as they’re capable.”
Sophomore Tiffany Owens led the team with 22 kills on 47 attempts and classmate Stephanie Snow added 11 kills on 15 attempts for a stellar .733 hitting percentage. The middle blocker added eight block assists in one of her best matches of the season.
With the win, Arizona continued it success at home where it has knocked off three top-ranked teams.
“It’s the crowd,” said Snow about what makes the difference in home matches. “It’s a lot easier to keep the energy up at home.”
The Wildcats don’t play Saturday and compete in their final home match of the season Sunday when Oregon State comes to the McKale Center for a noon match. The Beavers beat Arizona 3-0 in the first meeting in Corvallis, Ore.
