Women's Rowing Signs Claire Grover To National Letter Of Intent
Nov. 24, 2008
STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford Women's Rowing, coming off of a successful 2007-08 season which saw the varsity eight boat turn in a runner-up finish at the NCAA Championships, added to its numbers as head coach Yasmin Farooq announced the signing of Claire Grover to a national letter of intent.
Grover, a native of Orinda who attends Miramonte High School, has established herself as a top rower at the Oakland Strokes, one of the nation's premiere junior rowing programs.
'We've had our eyes on Claire for a long time and always felt that she would be perfect here at Stanford,' Farooq said. 'I'm so happy that she came to the same conclusion. Claire has both the academic and athletic chops to contribute to this university and this program. It's very exciting to see her now coming into her own as an oarswoman. She expressed interest in taking her rowing career as far as she can, and this is the perfect place to do that. We're looking forward to helping her reach her full potential as a collegiate rower, and beyond!'
This past fall, Grover was part of the varsity eight that captured victories at both the Head of the American and the Newport Autumn Rowing Festival, and finished ninth at last year's national championships.
'Claire is on the verge of breaking out to become a major force in this sport,' said Ian Simpson, the women's varsity coach of Oakland Strokes Rowing. 'I look at Claire as she walks around the boathouse and the word: 'rower' springs immediately to mind. Claire works very hard in practice and, meeting success and adversity with cheerful equanimity, is the perfect teammate. I am very happy that 'Red' has chosen Stanford. I have no doubt that she will thrive under Coach Yasmin Farooq's tutelage and she will make a significant contribution to the Cardinal.'
The Stanford women open the spring 2009 season Saturday, March 28, with the first day of competition at the Pac-10 Challenge Presented By Windermere, to be held at Redwood Shores.
